Tweeters at the American Petroleum Institute clearly never attended any of their ethics classes. The company has been busted for created several fake Twitter accounts to promote their brand, going so far as to create details and profiles on the fake accounts to make their tweets plausible and believable - I assume. When nearly every tweet the fake accounts make is regarding the proposed TransCanada pipeline, however, people may start to get suspicious (one would hope - but the need for people to become more internet- & social media- savvy and aware is a topic for another post).
In cutting corners on PR, they’ve effectively managed to create for themselves a stream of bad publicity that will be very hard to live down.
Particularly in social media, transparency & honesty is becoming more and more obvious, as companies are forced to become more accountable and up front with a generation who can do their own research and make up their own minds.
